Green Point Cricket Club’s Zac Elkin welcomed a big century on first-class debut for Western Province on Thursday.
Elkin was eventually dismissed for 162 late on day one of a key CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup fixture at Newlands in Cape Town. He faced 256 deliveries and struck 17 fours during 408 minutes at the crease.
His score is among the 12 highest struck, from any province, in this season’s CSA 3-Day Provincial Cup.
Elkin’s ton also marked the first by a non-Proteas batsman for Western Province in first-class cricket this season. Test cricketers Zubayr Hamza and Pieter Malan hit 183 and 124, respectively, against Northern Cape in November 2019.
What Andrew Puttick said about Elkin
“Zac takes the job of batting and scoring runs extremely seriously. He is often playing on bowler-friendly wickets. He is an effective batter who doesn’t worry too much about aesthetics,” former Western Province and Cape Cobras batsman Andrew Puttick told the SA Jewish Report recently.
“But he knows how to grind out runs, especially when it’s tough. Zac also has a strong build, so has good power especially against spin.”
Elkin is the sixth opening batsman to be deployed by Western Province in first-class cricket this season.
