Wicketkeeper-batsman Rory O’Brien has joined Yorkshire Cricket Club for the 2023-24 Western Province Cricket Association first division B.
The 36-year-old O’Brien has not played club cricket in Cape Town for several years. He previously played for St Augustine Cricket Club and Cape Town Cricket Club.
“My reason for coming out of retirement to join Yorkshire is basically two fold. The club have some very good, experienced players with a mixture of young talent and they have great ambition,” O’Brien told Club Cricket SA.
“Personally, I have always been someone who wants to compete for honours and push myself as best I can. I believe that Yorkshire, with their goals in mind, is a great place for me to rejuvenate my cricket journey and compete for the title.”
Yorkshire Cricket Club head coach Shaamiel Bey added: “It’s great to have Rory back in club cricket circles. He will bring plenty of good experience to Yorkshire. He was a really good player for St Augustine and Cape Town back in the day. We are happy to have him.
“He is a tough competitor and gives 110 percent on and off the field. He is an awesome personality to have around the team.”
Yorkshire Cricket Club have also signed spinner Hamza Warraich, who has left Montrose Cricket Club.
“Hamza was definitely a standout and tough challenge when playing against him. When Montrose were relegated, Hamza became a brilliant option to get aboard at Yorkshire. He will be a big part of our upcoming season,” concluded Bey.
Yorkshire Cricket Club ended the 2022-23 first division B in third-last position with seven wins, 10 losses and one no-result.
