Former Proteas batsman Ashwell Prince struck a half-century in Victoria Cricket Club’s defeat to Durbanville Cricket Club in Wednesday’s Western Province Veterans Cricket Association league fixture.
The official match scorecard initially stated Prince hit 61 in 40 deliveries, which included eight fours and a six, in Victoria Cricket Club’s final total of 135 for four in 20 overs.
Durbanville Cricket Club replied with 139 for six in 19.5 overs for a five-wicket win.
The validity of Prince’s score was publicly questioned after the match, as WPVCA rules state: “Once a batsman has 50 runs to his name, he must retire. He can return to bat should all the other wickets have fallen.”
Whether Prince actually retired at 50 or batted beyond due to a scoring, umpiring or other administrative error was investigated. His 61 was later updated to 52 on the official match scorecard.
Prince was shortlisted for Western Province Over-40 trials recently. Former Proteas seamer Roger Telemachus was also shortlisted.
In November 2022, Prince represented Victoria Cricket Club’s second XI against Green Point Cricket Club in the Western Province Cricket Association reserve division A.
He collected 149 not out – and briefly batted with son Joshua Prince.
