Herschelle Gibbs: Temba Bavuma should be doing much better

Former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs has said T20I captain Temba Bavuma “should be doing much better” after several years in international cricket.

Bavuma debuted for the Proteas in 2014 and has been capped 95 times across Test, ODI and T20I cricket.

He has struck 61 in four innings during the ongoing T20I series against India.

“[Bavuma] should be doing much better having played seven years already,” Gibbs wrote on Twitter.

Gibbs questioned the Proteas’ decision to promote all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius to third position in the batting order during the ongoing T20I series in India.

Pretorius has hit 53 runs in four innings. South Africa had a two-nil lead in the five-T20I series. India have fought back to two-all. The series decider will be played in Bengaluru on Sunday.

“Pretorius can’t play proper cricket shots, which you need up the order. Unfortunately strike rates of 121 don’t cut it in today’s game,” added Gibbs.

“Proteas made it hard for themselves. They should have wrapped it up after the third game. Having won the first two and momentum with them, their tentative batting cost them. On we go.”
