Former Proteas all-rounder David Wiese has been named in Namibia’s squad for the T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates later this year.

Wiese played six ODIs and 20 T20Is for South Africa from 2013 to 2016 before pursuing a career in the United Kingdom and globally.

He is currently playing for the Barbados Kings in the 2021 Caribbean Premier League and will be with Sussex for the remainder of the T20 Blast in England later this month.

Seamer Rusty Theron and all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe are among other South Africans to have represented a second country at international level. Theron and van der Merwe play for the United States of America and Netherlands, respectively.

“Representing your country in a World Cup is a privilege and it does not come across very often in one’s career. I wish the players all the very best,” said Namibia head coach Pierre de Bruyn.

“David’s dad was born here, so he’s eligible to play for Namibia.”

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus added: “We’ve played with the majority of our squad for a good period now, so everyone is clear on what is expected from each player. With that, we can go out and play freely.”
