Former Cape Cobras all-rounder Michael Rippon has been named in New Zealand’s limited-overs squad for the first time.
Rippon has been included in the squad for next month’s T20I series against Ireland and one-off ODI against Scotland – and August’s T20Is against the Netherlands.
Rippon played provincial and franchise cricket in South Africa before forging a career in New Zealand. He has been with Otago for several years.
The 30-year-old has also played nine ODIs and 18 T20Is for the Netherlands. He played for the Netherlands, against New Zealand, as recently as April 2022.
International Cricket Council rules allow players from affiliate and associate nations to remain available for full member countries at the same time.
However, once a player has been listed on a team sheet for a full member nation an international fixture, representing an affiliate or associate country is not allowed for three years.
“Rippon thoroughly deserves his selection after consistent performances domestically for many seasons now,” said New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen.
“His left-arm wrist spin is a point of difference and he also offers some punch down the order with the bat.
“We’ve got plenty of spin options in the squads and I’m sure Michael will relish the chance to rub shoulders with Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi and learn off their experience.
“With a T20 World Cup in Australia just around the corner and an ODI World Cup in India next year, this is a great chance to give players further opportunities on the international stage.”
