Fielding coach Ryan Maron is looking forward to working alongside new Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott.
Trott recently succeeded former Afghanistan head coach Graham Thorpe, while Maron has been re-contracted after stints in 2015 and 2017.
What Maron said
“It’s a great opportunity to work with Jonathan, who I have known for many years. I watched him as a young cricketer”, Maron told Club Cricket SA.
“We came from the same school – Rondebosch Boys’ High School. It’s awesome that we have background and know each other.
“I am sure Jonathan can add a lot of value to Afghanistan. He is a passionate, hard-working, very experienced and knowledgeable cricketer.
“I think he will offer a lot of expertise to the side. He is the type of person who always plays hard and always has his tail up.
“I am an honoured and privileged to be involved with Afghanistan again. It has been a few years since I have been involved in international cricket.
“I’ve learnt a lot working with my mentor, Jonty Rhodes, over recent years. I am hoping to add a lot of value to the Afghanistan side. I thoroughly enjoyed myself when I worked with them in the past.
“They are the kind of players you can push out of their comfort zone. You can assist them to go to the next level. I’m looking forard to working in that type of environment.”
What Trott said
Trott played first-class cricket for Boland and Western Province before relocating to the United Kingdom and forging a successful Test career with England.
Since moving into coaching, Trott has worked with England, Scotland and Warwickshire.
“I’m honoured and excited to have the opportunity to take one of international cricket’s most exciting teams through what is a huge year for their development as a team.” said Trott.
“I also believe that Afghanistan has proved to be a hot-bed of talent, and has produced players capable of playing the game in their own style and with unrivalled passion.
“I can’t wait to get to work with a group of players who are clearly capable of generating results in a style that will make the people of Afghanistan proud.”
