Opening batsman Sarel Erwee struck a century as South Africa moved to 238 for three at the close of play on day one of the second Test against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Friday.
Erwee shared a 111-run partnership with captain and fellow opener Dean Elgar before being dismissed for 108.
The centurion spent almost five hours at the crease and struck 14 fours.

Batsman Aiden Markram then struck 42. The scored marked his highest in Test cricket since the 60 collected against the West Indies in June 2021 – a period of eight months and 11 innings.
