Former Proteas captain Hansie Cronje died on 1 June 2002.
Cronje played 68 Tests and 188 ODIs from 1992 to 2000 before being banned for match-fixing. In 2002, he died in a plane crash.
“Every year on this day I remember a young man who had the world at his feet as a leader, but was sadly caught up in a messy business that changed his life and many others,” former Proteas spinner Pat Symcox wrote on social media on Thursday.
“After much turmoil, he resolved to make amends and whilst in that process was cruelly taken from us in tragic circumstances. Despite what happened he remains a man that was loved by many and today I remember him and his family. May he forever rest in peace. He was our captain.”
