7 biggest transfers of the SA domestic cricket off-season so far

Several players have moved to new provinces ahead of South Africa’s 2023-24 domestic season. Some moves are arguably more significant than others.

1. Zubayr Hamza – Western Province to Lions

Hamza recently return from a lengthy ban and a move from Western Province to the Lions presents somewhat of a fresh start.

The new environment might propel Hamza back into the Test XI.

2. Gerald Coetzee – Knights to Titans

Coetzee broke into the Proteas Test and ODI XIs this year – and has left the relegated Knights for the Titans in division one.

He will be joined by batsman Matthew Kleinveldt, who has also left the Knights for the Titans.

3. Tiaan van Vuuren – Warriors to Knights

The Knights have lost several players after being relegated. They have, however, gained fast bowler Tiaan van Vuuren from the Warriors.

Van Vuuren was prepared to effectively step down from division one to two.

4. Keegan Petersen – Dolphins to Boland

Petersen has returned to Boland after stints at Knights and later the Dolphins.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. I was in a good place at the Dolphins. They gave me all the opportunities. It was a successful side, we won two trophies there. But I made the decision for my family and what’s best for them,” said Petersen.

5. Glenton Stuurman – Warriors to Boland

Stuurman has joined Boland, too, from the Warriors. Time will tell whether the move brings a return to the Test XI.

“I feel like I’m 26, not 30 years old. I still think I can play Test cricket for the Proteas,” said Stuurman.

6. Kelly Smuts – Northern Cape to South Western Districts

Smuts has returned to South Western Districts after a season with Northern Cape. The move is relatively surprising after Smuts’ sentiment about SWD last year.

“My time at South Western Districts was short-lived, but it was good. I enjoyed being there, I wanted to stay, but it didn’t pan out accordingly,” he said prior to joining Northern Cape.

“It was a bitter end to the short relationship I had with South Western Districts. I enjoyed playing there. For it to end the way it did, it was a bitter pill to swallow.”

7. Chris Britz – North West to Northern Cape

Britz hit 94 not out against the Dolphins in the One Day Cup in December 2022. But opportunities were generally limited in division one.

He has since moved to division two with the Northern Cape, who require additional batting resources after Smuts and Rivaldo Moonsamy’s exits.
