Batsman Aiden Markram welcomed a first Test century in two years after scoring 115 on day one of South Africa’s series opener against the West Indies at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Markram had not played Test cricket since August 2022 prior to this week’s recall. He hadn’t scored a Test century since February 2021 – 108 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi – prior to Wednesday.
“I was fighting the tears a bit,” said Markram. “It meant quite a lot to me. It has been a strange journey, so I’m just grateful that it worked out.
“It’s always a bit more special at Centurion when you reach milestones on your home ground because you know friends and family are present too.
“There was a lot of relief, too. That’s what it boiled down to.”
Markram captained the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the maiden SA20 title earlier this year. He was recently named captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2023 Indian Premier League.
