Alberton Cricket Club veteran Justin Sammons has been named the Highveld Lions’ batting coach, ahead of the 2017-18 season.

Sammons played for Alberton Cricket Club for more than a decade – and brings a vast amount of coaching experience to the Gauteng-based franchise.

“I am incredibly excited to have an individual on board that is a hometown boy – and has contributed to our structures as a player, for Alberton Cricket Club’s first XI, and as a coach,” said Gauteng Cricket Board chief executive officer Greg Fredericks.

“Not only does he have thorough knowledge of our pipeline, but his international experience and the recommendation of players that he has worked with previously was a determining factor for us.”

Having previously worked with Zimbabwe Cricket and clubs in the Netherlands and United Kingdom, Sammons is eager to get a challenging stint with the Lions underway.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join the Highveld Lions. It is a dream come true and therefore I will work as hard as I possibly can for both the team and individual players in helping them achieve their potential,” he said.

The talented Cricket South Africa level three-qualified coach has also worked alongside Proteas all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, batsman Temba Bavuma and fast bowler Hardus Viljoen.

“We want to support our players in the best manner positive and Justin’s addition to the side will enable me to be a bigger all-round support to our players. I look forward to the value that he will add,” concluded Lions head coach Geoffrey Toyana.
