The University of Cape Town Cricket Club have appointed Kholekile Matikinca head coach ahead of the 2023-24 Western Province Cricket Association first division A.

Matikinca has succeeded former UCT Cricket Club head coach Eugene Moleon, who has since joined Tygerberg Cricket Club.

“For me as a young coach, this is a wonderful opportunity for me to test out my coaching skills. UCT is a great institute to work with. UCT Cricket Club has a rich history of producing quality players,” Matikinca told Club Cricket SA.

“I know recent times have been tough for UCT Cricket Club.

“But we will strive to get the team back into the WPCA premier league.

“We are not going to reinvent the wheel, but we are going to solidify structures. If things are not working, we will find new things that will work.

“I’m excited for this and grateful to UCT for the chance to add value to their system.”

Matikinca is currently Western Province Under-16 head coach, too, and has previously worked with Langa Cricket Club.

“I’m coaching Western Province Under-16, so I’m grateful to them for allowing me this chance to work with UCT as well. Hopefully this will be a win-win situation for all concerned.

“This will be a new challenge and I’m looking forward to dealing with new personalities.”

UCT Cricket Club second XI coach Lusindiso Malilwana and women’s XI coach Shiree Steyn have been retained.

“We are thrilled to confirm our coaching staff appointments for the new season. All the coaches have a wealth of experience and knowledge, having worked in the WP coaching structures for a number of years,” added UCT sports coordinator Kerr Rogers.
