All-rounder Wiaan Mulder hit 367 not out during South Africa’s second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo earlier this month.
This is the fifth-highest individual score in the history of Test cricket. It is the highest in Test cricket for South Africa. Batsman Hashim Amla previously held the record – 311 not out against England in 2012.
Mulder’s innings included 49 fours and one six. He was named Player of the Series after scoring 531 runs and taking seven wickets in two matches.
“It was a truly a sensational innings. I was in awe. It was a classy effort – just the measure of control for me was pleasing to witness,” Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince told SportsBoom.
“The stroke play from Wiaan reminds me of one of the bigger names like a Joe Root, Virat Kohli or Kane Williamson.”
Captaining the XI in the absence of the injured Keshav Maharaj and Temba Bavuma, Mulder declared South Africa’s first innings on 626 for five.
The declaration stopped Mulder from pursuing the highest individual score in the history of Test cricket. The West Indies’ Brian Lara has the highest – 400 not out against England in St John’s in 2004.
“Mulder made his statement after the game and it speaks volumes of his character, respecting some of the legends of the game. Yes, it was an opportunity for him to write his name right at the top of that list and I know the cricketing world will probably respect his decision,” added Prince.
‘I have a lot of respect for Mulder’s decision, and I am happy. And he did break the South African record – those opportunities will come. He played a fantastic innings.”
