The Atlantic Pirates have named Bellville Cricket Club’s Uwe Birkenstock captain for the inaugural Cape Premier League.
The Pirates purchased Birkenstock for 175,000 CPL dollars – the fictional currency spent at January’s player auction. The talented right-hander will bring a wealth of experience to the Pirates’ campaign, having collected 53 first-class and 37 List A fixtures for Boland between 2009 and 2015.
The Pirates also acquired, among others, Claremont Cricket Club leg-spinner Kyle Williamson, Cape Town Cricket Club batsman Neo Mlumbi, Victoria Cricket Club fast bowler Renaldo Meyer, Tygerberg Cricket Club wicketkeeper Carlos Koyana and Durbanville Cricket Club all-rounder Jaco Castle.
The Pirates’ opening fixture will be against the Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls at Newlands on Thursday, 4 April. The Bulls boast the services of the tournament’s most expensive purchase, after Cape Town Cricket Club fast bowler Brendan Young was bought for 750,000.
