Avendale Cricket Club have appointed new player-coach Dyllan Matthews ahead of the 2024-25 Western Province Cricket Association first division A.
Matthews has succeeded former Avendale Cricket Club player-coach Keanan Mitchell, who has rejoined Strandfontein Cricket Club.
“I’ve decided to take on the role of head coach at Avendale Cricket Club after positive conversations with the club’s leadership,” said Matthews.
“The project excites me, given the depth of talent at the club. We know it will take hard work to compete at the level we want to in a challenging league, but I’m up for the challenge.
“We have a vision that will take time to unfold, hence me signing a two-season deal. The focus will be on developing players to achieve their full potential, on and off the field.”
Matthews has been capped at first-class level by several teams, including the Lions, Cape Cobras, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Border and North West.
Avendale Cricket Club chairman Keyaam Benjamin added: “We’ve had a history of high-quality coaches and Dyllan continues that tradition. When the opportunity arose to secure his services, it was a no-brainer for us and we moved quickly to close out the deal.
“It’s our job to offer him every tool to succeed and see our vision come to life – and that’s our commitment.”
Avendale Cricket Club ended the 2024-25 WPCA first division A in eighth position. They won six and lost 16 matches.
