Batsman Barry Maart has stepped down as captain, but will continue to play for Pinelands Cricket Club.
Pinelands Cricket Club, who compete in the Western Province Cricket Association first division A, will announce Maart’s successor next week.
“After five years of dedicated leadership, Barry has decided to step down as the captain of Pinelands Cricket Club,” read a statement from the club.
“Maart’s departure marks the conclusion of a chapter in the club’s history, as he has been a central figure in shaping the squad over the time.”
Maart was among Pinelands Cricket Club’s leading run-scorers during the 2023-24 WPCA first division A. He struck 568 runs in 21 innings, including four half-centuries.
“It was a decision I made personally at the beginning of the last season – this would be my last as captain. It was an honour to captain Pinelands CC and something I never took for granted,” said Maart.
Maart captained Pinelands Cricket Club to sixth position on the 2023-24’s WPCA first division A points table. They won 12 and lost 10 matches.
“We look forward to Barry continuing his leadership role in the executive committee and on the field as a senior player for the team,” concluded Pinelands Cricket Club chairman Barney de Klerk.
