The Chennai Super Kings have signed Proteas batsman Dewald Brevis for the remainder of the 2025 Indian Premier League.

Brevis has replaced the injured Gurjapneet Singh in the Chennai squad. Brevis’ fee is INR 2.2 crore – approximately R4.8 million.

He has been in the IPL previously with the Mumbai Indians in 2022 and 2024. Chennai and Mumbai are the most successful teams in the history of the IPL with five titles each.

Brevis played two T20Is in 2023, but has not represented South Africa in international cricket since.

“Two years ago Dewald got an international opportunity and then things didn’t quite work out for him,” Cricket South Africa director of national teams and high Performance Enoch Nkwe told Rapport recently.

“There is little doubt that if he keeps playing like he is now, he will step onto the field for the Proteas again. He has been very impressive at domestic level and it is good that he has hit the reset button and is performing.

“There will undoubtedly be more opportunities for him to secure his place in the Proteas team. One focus will be to get him to the level where he can play consistently for the Proteas.”

Brevis has also played in the Caribbean Premier League. He won the SA20 title with MI Cape Town earlier this year.
