The WPCA, meanwhile, have reiterated intention to host a full 2021-22 club cricket season.

The 2020-21 season did not happen amid the coronavirus pandemic in the Western Cape, South Africa and globally. The 2019-20 season had ended early for the same reason.

“As mentioned previously, we are planning and looking forward to a full 2021-22 amateur cricket season,” said WPCA cricket services manager Clinton du Preez earlier this month.

“The various cricket committees will be convening soon to further discuss and confirm the season timelines. We look forward to engaging with all our stakeholders soon.

“We encourage our constituents to remain safe and ensure all coronavirus regulations are adhered to.

“With the recent announcement by president Cyril Ramaphosa that the country has moved down to alert level three lockdown restrictions, the WPCA will circulate all training regulations during this coming week.

“Upon confirmation of these revised regulations for cricket, all cricket-related activities may
commence from 10 August 2021.”
