Former Primrose Cricket Club spinner Usman Qadir will play in this year’s Big Bash League in Australia.

Qadir has been contracted by the Perth Scorchers, as cover for all-rounder Ashton Agar, whose international duty is expected to interrupt Big Bash League appearances.

“We are looking at some cover for Ashton,” said Scorchers head coach Adam Voges.

“We got found out in the semi-final last year when he was unavailable.

“We took the decision last year that our squad was strong enough not to need a second international, but with the success we have had, and the number of guys who will be playing for Australia during the Big Bash period, we will need some cover.”

Qadir strung together several telling performances for the Kenilworth-based Primrose Cricket Club during the 2015-16 Western Province Cricket Association season, including match hauls of nine for 95 against United Cricket Club, eight for 149 against Cape Town Cricket Club and six for 66 against Victoria Cricket Club.

The 25-year-old is the son of former Test and ODI leg-spinner Abdul Qadir – and played in two Under-19 World Cups.

The Scorchers’ 2018-19 campaign will start against the Hobart Hurricanes on 1 December. They have won the tournament three times – and were losing semi-finalists in 2015-16 and 2017-18.
