Bohemian Cricket Club’s Marco Marais and United Cricket Club’s Brandon Williams were the big winners at Wednesday, 28 March 2018’s Border Cricket Board awards function.
Marais was lauded for the most runs scored by an individual in the 2017-18 club season. He struck 502 runs in seven matches at an impressive average of 83.70.
The hard-hitting right-hander was also named Border Cricket’s Batsman of the Season and Player of the Season, largely due to November 2017’s record-breaking triple-century against Eastern Province in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup at Buffalo Park in East London – and other key innings.
The outstanding 300 not out spanned a mere 191 deliveries – and featured 35 fours and 13 sixes.
“I don’t think anyone actually thinks they are going to get 300,” Marais told The Daily Dispatch at the time.
“Before the season started I was targeting over 500 first-class runs and I have already passed that, so now I am going to have to make new goals for myself for the rest of the season.
“I was striking the ball so well. I decided that I was just going to go hard at them and it came off in the end.”
Williams was hailed for the most wickets taken by an individual in the club season. He clinched 33 wickets in a dozen fixtures at a telling average of 8.6.
