Cape Town Cricket Club trio William Hantam, Matthew Olsen and Brendan Young will retire from first XI cricket at the end of the 2022-23 Western Province Cricket Association premier league.

Olsen, Young and Hantam debuted for Cape Town Cricket Club’s first XI in the 2001-02, 2008-09 and 2015-16 season, respectively. Collectively, they’ve played 600-plus first XI fixtures for the club.

“We are immensely grateful for these three longstanding, loyal servants of our club,” read a statement from Cape Town Cricket Club.

“Their many years of contribution to the club, on and off the field, has been invaluable. We thank and honour them for the massive effort and love for the club.

“Hantam, Olsen and Young’s exits have been carefully and respectfully plotted. The timing is appropriate, as Ethan Cunningham, Craig Jeffery, Nicholas Scott, Nathan Schultz, and CTCC’s other youngsters step up during this changing of the guard.”

Hantam’s involvement at Cape Town Cricket Club will continue with the director of cricket role. Olsen and Young will likely return in different capacities in the future.

What Cape Town Cricket Club first XI captain Geoff Dods said

“Matthew, William and Brendan are incredible cricketers with amazing numbers behind them. They have given so much to our sport and to club cricket. Dismissing them or scoring runs off them has been held in high regard for so many consecutive seasons,” added Dods.

“It’s a big part of why the WPCA premier league is as competitive as it is, with guys coming up giving absolutely everything to attempt to dethrone them season after season.

“CTCC has entered into an exciting new era as a new generation of players get an opportunity at the club, but we must always remember these three players for what they have done – not only for the club, but the league as a whole. They will leave a monumental legacy.”
