Cavalier Cats keep LPL title with win over Celestial Knights

The Cavalier Cats retained the Lenasia Premier League title on the back Sunday’s eight-wicket victory over the Celestial Knights in the final in Johannesburg.

The Knights posted a final total of 176 for eight in the allotted 18 overs, after which the Cats reached a testing 177-run target with 11 deliveries to spare.

The pursuit was spearheaded by batsman Juanre van Wyk, who struck a brisk 96.

The former Free State batsman, who collected 34 first-class appearances between 2008 and 2014, hit eight sixes and seven fours during an entertaining 50-ball innings.

The Cats beat the Sporting Supermen in the final of last year’s LPL.

Elsewhere in Gauteng cricket

Meanwhile, Wanderers Cricket Club have appointed all-rounder Daniel Poulton captain for the 2019-20 Central Gauteng Lions premier league A.

Wanderers Cricket Club finished in fifth position in the 2018-19 CGL premier league A, after a dozen wins, eight losses and two draws, according to WebSports.

Poulton scored almost 400 runs in 16 innings at an average of over 35. He also took 33 wickets at an average of under 17.

“We are proud to announce that Dan will be the first XI captain for the 2019-20 season,” read a statement from the club.

“Dan first played for the club in 2006 while at school and has worked his way up through the teams to become a consistent premier league all-rounder. He has also spent three seasons playing in Ireland and another in England.”
