Western Province Colts all-rounder Christiaan Oberholzer is playing for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club in Easterns.
Oberholzer, who represented Rondebosch Cricket Club in the 2024-25 Western Province Cricket Association premier league, is attempting to eventually debut for Easterns in professional cricket.
He was included in Easterns’ squad for pre-season warm-up fixtures against North West earlier this month.
Oberholzer won’t be contracted by Easterns this season, but is pursuing eventual eligibility for 4-Day Domestic Series, T20 Knockout and One-Day Cup selection.
Easterns compete in division two of South African domestic cricket – and haveĀ given a high performance or academy contract to:
- Leander Lubbe (high performance contract);
- Danie Rossouw (high performance contract);
- Meykle Pillay (high performance contract);
- Brayden Hicks (high performance contract);
- Sabelo Mabanga (academy contract);
- Jason van Dyk (academy contract); and
- Shaveer Khan (academy contract).
“There is a massive difference between scouting and recruitment in my line of business. Scouting in cricket is watching potential talent – rough diamonds, unknowns in professional cricket. Recruitment deals a lot about player profile – the end,” said Easterns head coach Geoffrey Toyana on social media recently.
Before playing for Rondebosch Cricket Club, Oberholzer was with Cape Town Cricket Club after joining from Stellenbosch University Cricket Club (Maties).
Meanwhile, former Western Province Colts batsman Matthew de Villiers has been upgraded to a full contract by the Warriors. De Villiers had joined the Warriors on a high performance contract.
