Bellville Cricket Club’s Lenert van Wyk has secured the penultimate Club Cricket SA Player of the Week award for the year.
Van Wyk struck a masterful century in Saturday, 9 December 2017’s key Western Province Cricket Association premier league fixture against Rondebosch Cricket Club.
The talented right-hander’s superb 145, which spanned a mere 130 deliveries and featured 13 fours and seven sixes, earned the hosts a formidable first-innings lead over a visiting XI sporting the services of Cape Cobras batsman Andrew Puttick.
The 28-year-old van Wyk was well supported by middle-order half-centurion Handre Theron during a sterling 123-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
They were particularly fruitful against a Rondebosch Cricket Club attack serviced by just four bowlers, one of which delivered a mere six overs. Leg-spinner Alistair Gray, characteristically, bowled more than a third of the 60 overs.
Van Wyk narrowly beat Edgemead Cricket Club’s Simon Blake to this week’s accolade. Blake completed telling first-innings figures of seven for 26 in the WPCA first division A against Avendale Cricket Club.
