Club Cricket SA Player of the Week: Matthew Olsen

Matt Olsen Club Cricket SA Player of the Week

Cape Town Cricket Club’s Matthew Olsen has been named the Club Cricket SA Player of the Week, after reaching a monumental 500 first XI wickets.

Olsen, who debuted in the 2001-02 Western Province Cricket Association season, reached the milestone against Western Province Cricket Club on 18 November 2017.

Opening batsman and opposition captain Derek Mitchell was the veteran spinner’s 500th victim, as the hosts held the advantage in the key 2017-18 WPCA premier league fixture.

Olsen has taken five wickets or more in an innings 17 times, with a best of seven for 20 against Edgemead Cricket Club in the 2014-15 season. That seven-for contributed to a telling match haul of 13 for 70.

The 34-year-old has bowled more than 2700 overs, including 500-plus maidens, in 202 matches for Cape Town Cricket Club’s first XI. More than a fifth of his 501 victims have been removed lbw.

His best figures at Cape Town Cricket Club’s home ground, the Boon Wallace Oval, are six for 33 – against the University of Western Cape Cricket Club in 2012-13. He has also clinched two other six-fors, against Primrose Cricket Club and Tygerberg Cricket Club, at the Boon Wallace Oval.
