Western Province Cricket Club fast bowler Michael Cohen has been named in the Cape Cobras’ squad for this week’s Sunfoil Series fixture against the Knights in Oudtshoorn.
Cohen has effectively replaced seamer Dane Paterson, who has joined the Proteas squad for the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh.
The 19-year-old Cohen has relished a breakthrough year, having featured for South Africa Under-19 against their Sri Lankan counterparts, the South African Emerging Players against Zimbabwe A – and a Cricket South Africa Invitational XI against the touring Bangladeshis.
March’s first-class debut for Western Province against Border, too, yielded an impressive performance – three telling wickets in each innings of a comfortable five-wicket victory.
Former Crusaders Cricket Club all-rounder Kyle Simmonds, too, has been included in the Cobras’ squad. The 13-man party also boasts the services of Cape Town Cricket Club wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne and Durbanville Cricket Club’s Pieter Malan.
Union Stars Cricket Club seamer Ottneil Baartman, meanwhile, has been retained in a strong Knights squad. Baartman took three key wickets on debut for the defending champions during a draw with the Dolphins at Kingsmead in Durban late last month.
