International Olympic Committee confirm cricket’s return to the Games after absence of 120+ years

The International Olympic Committee have confirmed cricket will be included in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States of America.

Cricket has not been at the Olympics since for more than 120 years. Great Britain and France played an unofficial Test in 1900.

“At LA 2028, cricket will be played in the fast-paced T20 format, with six teams competing in both the men’s and women’s tournaments,” read this week’s statement from the IOC.

“A total of 90 athlete quotas have been allocated for each gender, allowing every team to name a 15-member squad.

“The International Cricket Council consists of 12 full members – Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Zimbabwe. Another 94 countries represent associate members.

“The cricket venues for LA 2028 are yet to be confirmed. The schedule will be finalised closer to the Games.”

The Proteas won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1998. South Africa’s squad included captain Shaun Pollock, spinner Derek Crookes, fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, all-rounder Jacques Kallis, batsman Mike Rindel and others.

Cricket was played at the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023.
