Commissioner Graeme Smith has confirmed Cricket South Africa’s new T20 league has been named the SA20.

The player auction will be held on 19 September 2022.

The first match of the tournament will be played on 17 January 2023.

Each of the six franchises are allowed 17-strong squads, comprising 10 local and seven overseas players. Each playing XI is allowed four overseas players.

All six SA20 teams are owned by companies who also own Indian Premier League franchises.

They each have an overall salary cap of $2 million (R34 million) to spend. This includes the fees paid for players signed prior to the auction.

SA20 pre-player auction signings

Some teams have signed up to five players prior the auction. One of these had to be a South African uncapped in Test, ODI or T20I cricket.

MI Cape Town have South Africa Under-19 batsman Dewald Brevis, Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan and England duo Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran.

The Paarl Royals have West Indies fast bowler Obed McCoy, England wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler, Proteas batsman David Miller and Titans all-rounder Corbin Bosch.

The Joburg Super Kings have former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis, England all-rounder Moeen Ali, Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana, West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd and Knights seamer Gerald Coetzee

Durban’s Super Giants have Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, England seamer Reece Topley, Dolphins spinner Prenelan Subrayen and West Indies duo Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers.

The Pretoria Capitals have Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje and Knights seamer Migael Pretorius.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have Proteas batsman Aiden Markram and Dolphins seamer Ottneil Baartman.

SA20 co-exists with BBL

The start of the SA20 will coincide with the closing fixtures of Australia’s Big Bash League. South African batsman Rilee Rossouw has been signed by the Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

“We have an agreement with the players that we’ve signed and the BBL has an agreement in place that allows players to take part in a portion of the Big Bash,” said Smith.

“They have a different structure this year, so the players in our league who have signed up will be there up until the early days of January so that they will be available.

“They’ll be released to come and play here, from where they’ll be fully available for the South African league.

“We’ve managed to attract quality players and a large part of our group will be South African players.

“We’ve got an extensive list of international players that we’re sorting out for the auction. We’re still finalising some of the auction details and we’re sorting out the player registration because of the large number of players.”

“The name of the tournament is very simple, but this is something that we can own and bring to life.

“A lot of work has gone into it and we’re very excited with what we’ve done and what we can create going forward. We hope it’s a brand that brings cricket together, along with new fans.”
