CSA: We have moved away from annual relegation system – we will be relegating every two seasons instead of one

WP cricketWestern Province currently compete in division one of South African domestic cricket.

Cricket South Africa will relegate a team from division one and promote a team from division two every second domestic season from 2027.

Currently, a first division team is relegated and a second division team promoted at the end of each domestic season.

“It will be continuing, but it will be over two years. We have moved away from the annual relegation system and, from the 2026-27 season, we will be relegating every two seasons instead of one,” said CSA chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki this week.

“Whoever gets promoted or relegated will stay up or down for two years. Everyone agreed that this is the best route.

“It was supported at both the chief executives and members’ council level, with on-field performance dictating who stays up and who goes down.”

South African domestic cricket returned to provincial from franchise competition in 2021. Currently, division one and two have eight and seven teams, respectively. This, too, is going to change.

“There will be some changes that will be implemented because of the restructuring,” added Moseki.

“There are few things that are being finalised over the next two weeks, but there will be some changes as part of the restructuring.

“We will still have 15 teams, but there will be some cost-saving changes that will be applied.”
