Seamer Dane Paterson took five wickets on day one of South Africa’s Test series opener against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday. This is his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Earlier this month, Paterson completed a maiden Test innings five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. He added two more wickets in the second innings – and was named Player of the Match.

“Hi to all the haters that doubted my selection. This one is for you. Thanks for all the negative comments about my selection. At the end of the day it’s not about you. It’s about the team,” Paterson wrote on social media at the time.

Paterson is South Africa’s third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket this year, behind spinner Keshav Maharaj in first position and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada in second.

Paterson’s first two Tests came in January 2020. He didn’t play Test cricket for four years prior to February 2024’s return.
