Former Proteas spinner Dane Piedt has joined Western Province as a spin bowling consultant ahead of South Africa’s 2022-23 domestic season.

Piedt relocated to the United States of America in 2020 – and played for the DC Hawks before joining the Morrisville Raptors in the Minor League Cricket Championship.

This is a short-term consultancy for Piedt, spanning the opening two months of the season.

What Piedt said

“I left WP after 10 years of service without saying goodbye properly, so I think if this is the last time that I am affiliated to WP, then I’ll gladly say that I had the opportunity to give back to my province,” said Piedt.

“I’m eternally grateful to the franchise and coach Salieg Nackerdien for the opportunity to return. I’ve been on record to say he’s the best coach I’ve ever worked for and for him to reach out to me, I couldn’t really turn that down.

“With me being from Cape Town, I just want to come back and give back to a frontline spin-bowling trio which has done really well.

George Linde has played for the Proteas, Junaid Dawood was the top wicket-taker in the domestic T20s last season and Kyle Simmonds is a spinning all-rounder who had a great season last season.

“I was there when Kyle made his Cape Cobras debut so it’s exciting to work with the young spinners coming through.

“But I also want to work with the batters to help change their outlook on how they play spin because I’ve bowled against some of the best guys in the world.”

What Nackerdien said

Piedt played nine Tests between 2014 and 2019 prior to relocating to the USA.

“I’m very happy and grateful to have Dane with us for the next two months. He will bring immense value and knowledge to our current spinners and our environment from a technical and tactical point of view,” added Nackerdien.

“Our journey started in the 2009-10 season at WP and he was one of the quick learners in that period, which, with consistent performances, eventually led to him getting into the Cobras and national set-up.

“Dane is a fantastic team man and always someone I enjoyed having around in the changing room. I’m really looking forward to working with him again and trust we will learn and feed off each other and that the players will benefit.”
