Fast bowler Darren Rolfe’s Cape Town Cricket Club playing career has ended.

Rolfe had not played in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league since March 2024 – and formally retired this week.

Rolfe, who debuted for the first XI in 2009, is the third-highest wicket-taker – and most prolific seamer – in the recorded history of Cape Town Cricket Club.

He took 405 first XI wickets at an average of 18.28. His tally included six five-wicket hauls, with a best of five for 11 against Durbanville Cricket Club in 2016.

“It was the greatest of privileges sharing the new ball with Darren for so many years and forming a formidable partnership,” said former Cape Town Cricket Club fast bowler Brendan Young.

“Darren’s determination, competitiveness and the real want to do well for the team are among the many standout qualities Darren possessed during his playing career.

“He will, no doubt, always be an integral part of Cape Town Cricket Club’s identity. His service and dedication to the club is unmatched.

“This is the time to take stock of his incredible achievements. With 405 first XI wickets over 267 matches, he goes down in history as Cape Town Cricket Club’s third-highest wicket-taker – an achievement to be immensely proud of.”

Only spinners Matthew Olsen, with 636, and Donovan Holman, with 440, took more first XI wickets than Rolfe in Cape Town Cricket Club’s recorded history.

“Darren was an incredible bowler and will, no doubt, remain a huge part of this club,” added former Cape Town Cricket Club captain Geoff Dods.

“He has been of immense service to us all, on and off the field. The club is a much better place for Darren’s service.”

Rolfe is relocating to England.
