Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens has been named in Pinelands Cricket Club’s XI for this week’s Western Province Veterans Cricket Association league clash against Cape Town Cricket Club.
Stevens played for Pinelands Cricket Club in first-division competition several years ago and, in 2020, represented Claremont Cricket Club in the Western Province Cricket Association premier league.
Stevens will turn 47 years old later this year – and was recently released by Kent. The veteran of 326 first-class matches, however, has not formally retired.
“I’ve still got the bit between my teeth. I still love the challenges. It comes down to desire, desire to keep competing and keep challenging myself each year,” he said last year.
“If I say to you now, ‘I’m finishing at the end of the year’, my body will shut down because it will know it’s coming to an end. Whereas in my mind I’m like, ‘No, no, no, I’m still playing in 2023‘, and that’s how I look at it.”
