David Miller holds the international cricket record he doesn’t want to have. No one has played more international cricket without appearing in a Test match than Miller.
The hard-hitting left-hander has made 274 international white-ball appearances. The closest contender for the non-Test record is retired West Indian Keiron Pollard with 224.

Miller built a solid first-class record, averaging 36.32 in 63 matches, including six centuries, which he aided by electrifying fielding. But it was a time when many of the Proteas Test batting line-ups included Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, when white-ball cricket became increasingly popular – and lucrative. In 2018, closing in on his 30th birthday, Miller retired from first-class cricket.
He was sought after by teams around the world – playing for 22 different representative teams – and was a crowd favourite in South Africa, where supporters waved banners proclaiming “Killer Miller” and “Killer Miller. It’s Miller Time”. He is one of four players to have scored more than 3,000 runs in ODIs with an average above 40 and a strike rate above 100. The others are De Villiers and England’s Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow.
Miller is famous for hitting big sixes and having crossed all three stands on different sides of his home ground at Kingsmead in Durban. He recently hit a ball out of the cricket ground against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The South African is primarily known for his explosive batting in limited-overs cricket, particularly in the Twenty20 format. He made his debut for the South African national cricket team in 2010 and has been a key player for the team in various ICC tournaments, including the ICC Cricket World Cup and ICC World Twenty20.
Miller has also competed in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has represented teams like the Punjab Kings. In April 2023, Miller was acquired by the IPL’s Gujarat Titans. The left-handed batsman also plays in the Carribean Premier League and SA20. Miller is currently aiming for consistency on the cricket pitch before the upcoming World Cup in India.
Batting at No. 6 in a team without an all-rounder, Miller is likely to find himself in a situation at the World Cup where he will be responsible for rebuilding an innings.
Both Miller’s sides made headlines as South Africa had to win the last three matches of their recent home series against Australia after losing the first two. In the fourth match, he smashed an unbeaten 82 from 45 balls as he and the inspired Heinrich Klaasen added an incredible 222 from 94 balls for the fifth wicket. In the decider, in more delicate conditions, he made 63 off 65 balls more accurately to help South Africa reach a defendable total after a difficult start.
