MI Cape Town beat the Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 97 runs in Thursday’s SA20 fixture at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.
MI Cape Town totalled 174 for seven after a half-century from batsman Dewald Brevis – and limited the Sunrisers to 77 all out.
MI Cape Town all-rounder Delano Potgieter completed figures of five for 10 in three overs. These are the best figures by a seamer in the history of the SA20.
“Everyone’s got different plans, for different venues and all of that,” said Potgieter, who was named Player of the Match.
“We have an amazing bowling line-up – Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, with the spinners George Linde and Rashid Khan. They bowl the bulk of the overs. So there was no need for me to bowl. And, yeah, the captain threw me the ball tonight and I was extremely happy about it, and it turned out perfectly.”
The Sunrisers are the most successful team in the history of the SA20 with two titles. MI Cape Town ended the 2023 and 2024 tournament in last position.
“It’s only the first game of the tournament, but it’s nice to start off with the win. I couldn’t ask for a better day for it. It happened so quickly. I was standing at the top of my mark, and I just said, ‘I’m just going to try to hit the top of the stumps,’ and fortunate enough for me, it worked out perfectly,” added Potgieter.
Spinner Roelof van der Merwe holds the record for the best figures in the SA20. He took six for 60 for the Sunrisers against Durban’s Super Giants in 2023. This was also at St George’s Park.
