“Thought it’s about time I gave a brief life update. Last November scans and X-rays picked up that I had a fracture at C7 in my neck,” Porteous wrote on social media this week.

“I was in a neck brace for the next eight weeks, after which follow-up scans found no healing. I then had surgery in January and was told I have an osteoma (a benign tumour) in my neck, which ended my time in professional cricket.

“Post surgery, spent another six weeks in the neck brace, followed by months of rehabilitation. It has been a challenging year, but I’m feeling stronger than I have for a long time and have some big goals ahead. Life’s good.”

Porteous’ final first-class fixture was against the Titans in Centurion in November 2023. He hit successive half-centuries against an opposition bowling attack that included Proteas Junior Dala, Neil Brand, Donovan Ferreira and Dewald Brevis.
