Batsman Marques Ackerman has been appointed Dolphins captain for the 2025 One-Day Cup.
Ackerman has succeeded former Dolphins’ One-Day Cup captain Eathan Bosch. Ackerman has previously coached the Dolphins in first-class cricket.
“It’s a great privilege to be the captain again,” said Ackerman. “I am a little bit older now and a little bit more experienced, but there are things that I can take from my last stint as captain and things that I can do differently as well.
The Dolphins ended last season’s One-Day Cup, division one, campaign in sixth position. They won one and lost two matches – and had four no-results.
“We have struggled in this format over the past few seasons, but we have put that behind us and will take this one game by game. There’s definitely a renewed energy in the team and hopefully we can put in good performances and have a successful campaign,” added Ackerman.
Ackerman played nine matches for the Pretoria Capitals in the recent SA20 – and has represented South Africa A.
“It was a pretty easy decision for us to give Marques the captaincy given that he has captained the Dolphins in the four day competition,” said Dolphins head coach Quinton Friend.
“He’s a fantastic leader and a pretty fiery character which is what we going to need in a tournament like this.
“Tactically he has a very smart captain, he’s got a good cricketing brain and thinks about the game a lot. He’s someone that is constantly thinking about how we can change things for the better.
“Marques has the respect of the guys around him and they want to play for him. He’s got all the skills and is someone that has a good understanding of the group as a whole.”
Meanwhile, Lions batsman Dominic Hendricks has joined the Knights for the 2025 One-Day Cup.
Hendricks has been playing List A cricket since 2009 – and averages 38 in the format. He has hit four List A centuries.
The Knights also compete in division one of the One-Day Cup.
“Hendricks is suiting up in navy and orange as he joins the Knights on loan from the Lions for our One-Day Cup campaign,” read a statement from the Knights.
Western Province are the reigning One-Day Cup, division one, champions. They will play the first match of the 2025 tournament against the Lions at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday.
