Eastern Province acting CEO ‘doing stock take of cricket structures mess’

Eastern Province acting chief executive officer Stuart Fortuin’s tenure started earlier this month.

Fortuin has replaced predecessor Eugene Jacobs, whose 18-month tenure ended in January.

“I’m doing a bit of a stock take at the moment,” Fortuin told Rapport.

“The cricket structures are a bit of a mess and I’m wrapping my head around the role of Mega Sportz – the union’s professional wing.

“The board is busy finalising my contract. I’m caretaker for the time being.”

Fortuin has previously worked with Border in South African domestic cricket – and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20.

Meanwhile, Dolphins Cricket chief executive officer Heinrich Strydom will not become the new chief executive officer of the Western Province Cricket Association.

Former WPCA CEO Michael Canterbury’s tenure ended earlier this year.

WPCA president Johannes Adams wanted to appoint Canterbury’s successor by the end of March 2024. Strydom was offered the position, but declined.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision to make,” Strydom told Rapport.

“I was really looking forward to the challenge at Newlands but, unfortunately, I had to decline the offer in the end.

“It has given me a great chance to reset and hopefully take KwaZulu-Natal Cricket and the Dolphins to the next level as we prepare for the 2027 World Cup.”

Former Cape Cobras and Proteas wicketkeeper-batsman Dane Vilas also applied for the post.
