England amassed the highest total in the history of ODI cricket on Friday.
Opener Phil Salt and middle-order batsmen Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler hit centuries, as England gathered record-breaking 498 for four in the allotted 50 overs against the Netherlands at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen, Holland.
Buttler, Malan and Salt gathered 162 not out, 125 and 122, respectively. Buttler faced a mere 70 deliveries – and struck 13 sixes.
Previous highest team totals in ODIs
England held the previous highest total in the history of ODI cricket – 481 for six collected against Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham four years ago.
They have the third-highest score in ODI cricket, too – 444 for three versus Pakistan six years ago. That was also struck at Trent Bridge.
Friday’s total was the 21st in excess of 400 in ODI cricket.
England and South Africa are the countries with the most 400-plus ODI totals with six each. India have five. Australia and Sri Lanka have two each – and New Zealand one.
