England hit 498/4 – the highest total in the history of ODI cricket

England amassed the highest total in the history of ODI cricket on Friday.

Opener Phil Salt and middle-order batsmen Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler hit centuries, as England gathered record-breaking 498 for four in the allotted 50 overs against the Netherlands at the VRA Ground in Amstelveen, Holland.

Buttler, Malan and Salt gathered 162 not out, 125 and 122, respectively. Buttler faced a mere 70 deliveries – and struck 13 sixes.

Previous highest team totals in ODIs

England held the previous highest total in the history of ODI cricket – 481 for six collected against Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham four years ago.

They have the third-highest score in ODI cricket, too – 444 for three versus Pakistan six years ago. That was also struck at Trent Bridge.

Friday’s total was the 21st in excess of 400 in ODI cricket.

England and South Africa are the countries with the most 400-plus ODI totals with six each. India have five. Australia and Sri Lanka have two each – and New Zealand one.

Venues for highest totals in ODI cricket

Three of the 10 highest highest totals in the history of ODI cricket have been struck at the Wanderers in Johannesburg – and twice each at Amstelveen in Holland and Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Opposition who conceded highest ODI totals

The West Indies, Australia and Netherlands have conceded two of the 10 highest ODI totals each. Zimbabwe, South Africa and India have done this once each.

England also get highest List A total

England’s 498 for four also marked the highest total in the history of List A cricket. Surrey’s 496 for four against Gloucestershire in the 2007 Friends Provident Trophy was the previous highest List A total. That match was played at The Oval in London.
