Former Proteas captain Johan Botha has been named head coach of Brisbane Heat in Australia’s Big Bash League.
Botha relocated from South Africa in 2012 – and has since become an Australian citizen.
“Johan is a fiercely motivated and determined person and has consistently displayed those traits during his playing and coaching career,” said Queensland head of elite cricket Joe Dawes.
“He is very much at the cutting edge of the game internationally and will bring a fresh and dynamic outlook to our organisation and especially the Bulls and championship Brisbane Heat squads.”
Botha has coached in the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash League, International League T20 in the United Arab Emirates and Major League Cricket in the United States of America.
“I’ve played a lot of four-day and one-day cricket but I haven’t coached it,” added Botha. “So I think that’s going to be a little bit of a challenge to start with.”
Botha played five Tests, 78 ODIs and 21 T20Is from 2006 to 2012. He captained South Africa 21 times across ODI and T20I cricket.
