7:56pm: Jonathan Draai to the Vikings for 1.9 million. Bryan Edwards to the Phantoms for 25,000. Egan van Aswegen to Sixers for 25,000. Ali Akbar Shaik to the Dragons for 25,000. Thomas Kannemeyer to the Bulls for 25,000. Tebogo Faas to the Vikings for 25,000. Brendon Louw and Cameron Tanner to the Phantoms for 25,000 each. David Bedingham bought by the Phantoms for 25,000.

6:14pm: Van Wyk goes to the Bo-Kaap Phantoms for 3.7 million after a heavy bidding war with other teams. That’s the most played for any player in the history of the CPL. The Dragons really wanted him, but lost out in the end.

6:09pm: Lenert van Wyk is up to start the bidding.

6:08pm: Names will come up in a random order, not alphabetically.

6:03pm: Tournament director Ziyaad Desai is talking through a bit of preamble. Won’t be long before the players names start coming up.

5:58pm: Meanwhile, Geoff Dods has been named assistant coach at the District Sixers.

5:50pm: Matthew de Villiers is the most expensive player in the history of the CPL. He was bought by the Bo-Kaap Phantoms for 1.7 million last year. Let’s see if that number is beaten this evening.

5:45pm: Early chat suggests the Patriots will go for Neo Mlumbi and the Vikings will pursue James Crowson. The Outlaws may target Neil Hornbuckle.

5:16pm: Teams have a budget of approximately 6 million CPL dollars to spend at the auction – the tournament’s fictional currency. With squads of 16, and six players already retained, it means teams can spend an average of 600,000 per player.

4:02pm: Early chat suggests the Peninsula Patriots might push for Neo Mlumbi and the Cape Vikings could go for James Crowson.

These are the players retained by teams for the 2021 CPL.

Here is a list of the most expensive players at the 2020 auction. Ultimately, though, the CPL was not played that year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, over in the US

Justin Dill and Dane Piedt, who have played in the CPL, are now involved in the Minor League Cricket Championship in the United States of America.

Several Proteas – past and present – are registered for the auction. Their availability for the tournament, though remains in the balance.

  • Sabir Mallie, meanwhile, has left the Sixers to be with the Dragons.
