Former franchise fast bowler Eugene Moleon has been named the University of Cape Town Cricket Club’s new head coach, for the 2018-19 Western Province Cricket Association season.

Moleon has succeeded the outgoing Paul Phillipson, who has accepted a coaching post at Wynberg Boys’ High School. The experienced Ayden Smith will be Moleon’s assistant coach.

The 41-year-old Moleon played 49 first-class and 66 List A matches – for the Lions, North West, Western Province – between 1996 and 2007.

“Welcome, Eugene, The former Western Province and Lions player will be taking over the first team for the 2018-19 season,” read a social media statement from the club.

“He won the Pro20 with the Lions and represented South Africa at the Hong Kong Sixes, so there is no doubt there will be some explosive cricket coming from the players.”

The University of Cape Town Cricket Club occupied third position in the 2017-18 first division A, prior to its cancellation due to water shortages in the Western Cape.

They are the reigning WPCA Club of the Year – and earlier this year welcomed opening batsman Jack Newby’s elevation to the Western Province Sunfoil 3-Day Cup team. Newby secured a Western Province contract in June.

Meanwhile, batsman Mujahid Behardien has left United Cricket Club for fellow first division A club Primrose Cricket Club.

Behardien captained United Cricket Club through a successful 2017-18 first division A campaign, which yielded six victories in seven attempts – and first position in the 12-team standings.
