Former Tygerberg Cricket Club all-rounder Alfonso Thomas has been named the West Indies’ bowling coach.

Thomas played one Twenty20 International for the Proteas against Pakistan at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in 2007.

He also represented the Pune Warriors, Adelaide Strikers and Dhaka Gladiators in the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League and Bangladesh Premier League, respectively.

The right-arm seamer and right-handed batsman ended his playing career with Sussex and Somerset in English county cricket in 2015.

“We are focused on improving team performance, as well as broadening and deepening the coaching expertise in the region,” said Cricket West Indies director Jimmy Adams.

“We know we’ve got vital games and tournaments this year and we’re confident that these appointments will strengthen the Windies squads for this year and our future plans.”

Thomas will work alongside former University of Cape Town Cricket Club head coach Ryan Maron, who is currently the West Indies’ assistant coach.

The West Indies will compete in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in March 2018 – and play three Tests against Sri Lanka in June.
