Spinning all-rounder George Linde has joined South Africa’s squad for the remainder of the 2025 Champions Trophy as a travelling reserve.

Linde has not played ODI cricket in four years, but represented the Proteas in T20I competition in December 2024.

“In one-day cricket it’s difficult because we have Keshav Maharaj. But who knows, if we get an injury, it might create an opportunity for George again,” said Proteas limited-overs coach Rob Walter earlier this year.

“I’m under no illusions about the quality of George Linde. His chances will depend on the balance we’re looking for in the team. It often happens that our all-rounders have the same kind of skills.”

Whether Linde will be named in South Africa’s XI for this week’s Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand in Lahore, Pakistan, remains in the balance.

South Africa are waiting on the availability of batsmen Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi. Bavuma and de Zorzi missed last week’s fixture against England due to illness.

Markram captained the XI against England in the absence of Bavuma, but has since sustained a hamstring injury.

“I think it’s alright. It feels okay. Hopefully over the next few days, I can get some good rest and then sort it out and be good to go from there,” said Markram.

If successful in Wednesday’s semi-final, the Proteas will play Australia or India in Sunday’s final.
