Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has formally been ruled out of South Africa’s 2025 Champions Trophy campaign.

Coetzee was named in the squad for the Champions Trophy, but then sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained during this year’s SA20.

On Wednesday, he was included in the Proteas squad for this month’s ODI tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan.

“Coetzee has made a recovery from a left hamstring strain to further strengthen the attack,” stated Cricket South Africa at the time.

A few hours later, though, CSA ruled him out of the Champions Trophy and the tri-series.

“The 24-year-old experienced tightness in his groin while completing his 10 overs at training on Wednesday morning,” said CSA.

“Following further assessment by the Proteas medical team, it was determined that the symptoms posed an increased risk of significant injury at a higher bowling load required for the upcoming ODI matches.

“A replacement will be announced in due course. Coetzee will not be considered for selection for the Champions Trophy.”

South Africa are also without the injured Anrich Nortje.
