“As I reflect on the incredible journey of the past 15 years, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every one of you who has been a part of my cricketing career,” Mokoena wrote on social media.

“Today marks the end of a chapter filled with dedication and unforgettable moments. To all the teams I have represented, your belief in my ability and willingness to invest in my journey have not only provided me with the resources I needed to to excel, but also served as a constant source of motivation.

“Your belief has enabled me to focus wholeheartedly on my training, competition and self-development, knowing that I have your backing every step of the day.

To my team-mates – thank you for being my second family on and off the field. The camaraderie we shared, the victories we celebrated and the challenges we overcame together have shaped me – not only as a cricketer but as a person.

To my coaches – your guidance and wisdom have been been invaluable throughout the journey. The belief and trust in my abilities pushed me to strive for excellence every single day.

To my family – words cannot express the depth of my gratitude. Your unwavering support, sacrifice and the encouragement have been the cornerstone of my success. I’ll forever be indebted to you for standing by me through every high and low.

To the sponsors – thanks once again for your generosity and it has been an honour to represent your brand. Every shot played and every run scored wouldn’t have been possible without your trust and belief in my ability.

To the cricket family and fans – thank you for endless love and support. Your messages of encouragement fueled my passion for the game and inspired me to give it my all, every time I stepped on to the field.

“As I bid farewell to my playing days, I’m grateful for all the lifelong friendships and invaluable lessons. While cricket days on the field are over, my passion and love for the game will never change.

“I came in with a smile and I’m leaving with a smile. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was an incredible journey filled with endless adventures and opportunities.”

Mokoena is the latest among several South African first-class cricketers to retire ahead of the 2024-25 domestic season, including former Proteas batter Pite van Biljon.
