Batsman Zac Elkin has left Green Point Cricket Club for the remainder of the 2018-19 Western Province Cricket Association season.

Elkin will spend the rest of the season with the Mpumalanga Cricket Union, who are recruiting additional players amid an attempt to become a fully-fledged first-class team.

He debuted for Piet Retief Cricket Club in theĀ Gert Sibande District Municipality premier league recently, striking 82 in comfortable victory over Sasol Cricket Club.

“Leaving Cape Town, Green Point Cricket Club and the Western Province provincial squad for the second half of this season wasn’t an easy decision to make,” Elkin told Club Cricket SA.

“But I’ve invested a huge amount of time and energy into my game for a long time now and the opportunity to possibly play first-class cricket next season – and to be a part of a union with a lot of ambition – was not something I could turn down.”

The 27-year-old Elkin debuted for Western Province in List A competition early last year, but wasn’t afforded a maiden first-class match for the province.

He was the first division A’s leading run-scorer during Green Point Cricket Club’s 2017-18 campaign – and enjoyed a solid stretch of form in 2018-19, including two centuries against Primrose Cricket Club and one against Kraaifontein Cricket Club. These were complemented by half-tons against Strandfontein Cricket Club, Gugulethu Cricket Club and Avendale Cricket Club.

The talented right-hander has been listed for Friday, 25 January 2019’s Cape Premier League player auction – and confirmed availability for the inaugural tournament.
