Edgemead Cricket Club seamer Simon Blake took a hat-trick in last week’s 2018-19 Western Province Cricket Association first division A victory over Northerns Goodwood Cricket Club.
Blake removed overseas recruit Ian Cockbain, all-rounder Eric Osner and tail-ender Morne du Randt with consecutive deliveries amid telling figures of five for eight in 7.1 overs.
Left-armer Blake will play for the District Sixers in the inaugural Cape Premier League later this year. He was a late addition to the tournament’s auction list and, while not selected during formal proceedings, was belatedly added to the Sixers’ 16-man squad.
Effectively a franchised Twenty20 club cricket tournament, the inaugural Cape Premier League will be played in Cape Town in April 2019.
Six teams – Sixers, Atlantic Pirates, Cape Vikings, Dromedaris Dragons, Hoeri Kwaggo Bulls and Knysna Falcons – will participate.
The tournament is scheduled for three weekends across 5, 6, 12, 13, 26 and 27 April 2019. These Saturdays and Sundays might be joined by Fridays 4, 11 and 18 April.
Wynberg Cricket Club, Western Province Cricket Club’s Wally Wilson Oval and Vineyard Oval and Langa Cricket Club have been mooted as venues. Wynberg Cricket Club might host day-night fixtures, subject to floodlight effectiveness. Newlands will also be considered, dependent on availability.
