Sunrisers Hyderabad hit highest total in IPL history

The Sunrisers Hyderabad amassed the highest total in the history of the Indian Premier League on Wednesday, 27 March 2024.

Hyderabad hit 277 for three in 20 overs against the Mumbai Indians at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad.

South African batsman Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with 80 not out from 34 deliveries, including seven sixes. Proteas team-mate Aiden Markram collected 42 not out.

South Africa Under-19 seamer Kwena Maphaka conceded figures of zero for 66 in four overs on debut for the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai team-mate and Proteas seamer Gerald Coetzee took one for 57 in four overs.

“We have got the best groundsmen in the world and they are producing very good wickets to bat on,” said Klaasen.

“A lot of pressure comes with the form I’m in. Our top order set the tempo. It was incredible to have my best mate, Aiden, with me while I scored those runs.”

Mumbai replied with 246 for five in 20 overs – for a 31-run defeat. The match yielded a record 523 runs in total – and 38 sixes.

Previous highest IPL team score

The previous highest team total in the IPL was 263 for five from the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Pune Warriors at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in 2013.

West Indian Chris Gayle struck 175 not out from 66 deliveries, including 17 sixes, in that fixture.

IPL history

The IPL started in 2008, when the Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural title. Mumbai and the Chennai Super Kings are the most successful teams in the history of the tournament. They have five titles each. Chennai are the reigning champions.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL title twice. Hyderabad and the Gujarat Titans have won the title once each. Bangalore, the Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants have never won the IPL title.
